Abraham Marukhyan left for the 44-Day War on September 27, when he learned that the Azerbaijani side had attacked Artsakh. He participated in the war in Mataghis, where he had served as an officer for two years.
Abraham Marukhyan was a lieutenant. Although he had the profession of a diplomat, in 2018 he decided to enter the Military Institute named after Vazgen Sargsyan. After graduation he received the rank of lieutenant and went to serve in Matagis. He was the head of artillery intelligence.
In the first days of the 44-day hot battles, Abraham took part in the battles in Horadiz. There were heavy battles, the enemy continuously shelled the positions where the lieutenant and his comrades were. There was an order from the command staff to retreat. Abraham and five others refused to back down.
After the order to retreat, Abraham took command of the group of six, while teaching his friends combat training. After a while, there was a problem with the weapon. His father was told that Abraham crossed a post abandoned by the Armenian side, which was not yet occupied by the enemy but was under their target, and took weapons from there.
“There was a post called 300, which was also a command post from where the Armenians retreated. Abo, knowing that there were weapons there, he went and brought them on October 2, and there were also important maps, which he destroyed so that the enemy would not have access to important information,” said his father, Tigran Marukhyan.
Abraham and his friends were killed at dawn of October 3. The parents could not find their son’s body for seven months.
The fighting path of Abraham Marukhyan is summarized in the book “The Devotee”. The author is novelist, poet Alina Mkheyan.
“I always wrote about heroes. Abraham’s mother said that she really liked what I wrote and wanted me to write another book about Abraham. I have always refused, because Abraham is the Armenian, writing about whom is a great responsibility. One day I decided that if Abraham did not spare his life for us, I must find strength in myself and start working on a book about him,” said the author of the book in a conversation with Forrights.am.
“I called the book “The Devotee”, because Abraham was truly a devotee: for me, he will always remain the legendary Abo. Through the book, I have conveyed the image of a true Armenian: unfailing like Abraham, who was a true guerilla. The book is about patriotism, unfailing devotion to the motherland,” said the author.
According to Abraham’s mother, Marine Shirinyan, the purpose of publishing the book is to transfer her son’s patriotism to the new generation. “Abo’s character is instructive in terms of patriotism and dedication to the motherland. Abo’s type cannot be broken; and an Armenian should be like that. We did not succeed in this war for some reason, but the Armenian type should not be broken: we still have a fight, our homeland is and will remain. My hope is that through the image of Abo, I can do something for the motherland,” said the mother.
