Nikol Pashinyan promised disclosures the parents of the killed soldiers

Nikol Pashinyan promised disclosures the parents of the killed soldiers
The parents of soldiers who have died in non-combat conditions were pleased with yesterday`s meeting with the Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Their conversation lasted about 45 minutes. During that time, the Prime Minister talked to the parents as a regular human being and listened to whatever they had to say about their concerns. He underlined that he had no reason not to fully disclose the criminal cases of the deaths of their sons in non-combat conditions. He told that he knew there were cases not solved at all, or cases that officially were considered solved but the parents had explicit suspicions about the outcomes.

All the parents have positive impression from their meeting with the Prime Minister. Gohar Sargsyan, the mother of Tigran Ohanjanyan, who died in Karchaghbyur military unit in 2007, told the Foreright.am: “I have great expectations from Mr. Pashinyan. I do not think he will close his eyes to the murders and let them remain unrevealed. He told us that, although he does not promise that right tomorrow there will be disclosures, one thing is for sure: there will be exposures, the authorities will not ignore it. For so many years, the previous authorities did nothing. We have expectations from this government.”

Let us remind that, according to the official version, Tigran Ohanjanyan was electrocuted in the Karchaghbyur military unit. However, the traces of violence on Tigran`s body were led his parents to believe that their son was brutally murdered. The examination revealed that there was no life-threatening electric outlet in the scene of the incident. According to Gohar Sargsyan, the preliminary investigative body was unable to prove the version of the electrocution claimed by itself. During 11 years, Tigran Ohanjanyan`s case has been under consideration of 3 prosecutors and 3 military prosecutors. In 2015, the proceedings were suspended once more.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan promised the parents of the killed soldiers that, if the investigating authorities do not disclose their sons’ deaths, he will pursue the cases to be transferred to the National Security Service and be investigated under his immediate supervision. He told the parents that there is a possibility that the limitation period of some of the cases might be irreversibly expired. Nana Muradyan and Gohar Sargsyan insisted that, in such cases, the criminal investigators and prosecutors who have covered up the assassinations, should be brought to justice.

“It’s not chickens the parents give to the army so that they can eat them and not be accountable. The investigators waste years and years and tell us nobody is accountable?” says Mrs. Nana. “If the killers of my son are not disclosed, then the investigators and prosecutors who concealed the case should be accountable,”, says Gohar Sargsyan.

The preliminary investigation body labeled Valeri Mirzoyan’s death as suicide and led the investigation toward that direction. The relatives did not believe this hypothesis declaring that Valeri had witnessed fuel thefts at the military unit and that was the reason he was killed.

The Prime Minister asked Mrs. Nana how she knew about it. “I quoted former Prosecutor General Gevorg Kostanyan`s words to Mr. Pashinyan: the Prosecutor General had said, yes, Valeri Muradyan witnessed numerous malpractices at the military unit. Kostanyan also said that the investigation is underway and the perpetrators will be punished. At the end, he said, I am responsible for everything I say. And, after all that, Kostanyan did nothing.”

Nana Muradyan knows why her son`s murder was not disclosed. During the previous government, under the leadership of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Army, a corruption chain was functioning. From the highest level of power there was an order not to punish those guilty of the deaths of servicemen. Eight years after her son’s tragic death, Nana Muradyan did not receive an answer to an important question: who has deprived her son of life? During these years, the case was suspended once, then the trial resumed, but with no results. In 2017, two servicemen were charged for inciting suicide. A search was announced but, since  none of them was found, the case has been suspended once more. Nana Muradyan is sure that, in reality, the investigator did know the whereabouts of one of them but did not detain him.

“We join not Nikol Pashinyan, but the goal of his struggle, because enough is enough: they are drinking the blood of the people; we must clean the system. The world has seen our sufferings. After all, we struggle so much not just for our children; our children are irreversibly lost: we just demand justice now, so that the assassinations do not continue,” says Nana Muradyan.

For the time being, the parents decided to stop their traditional protest rallies in front of the government building and give some time to Prime Minister Pashinyan`s government and law enforcement agencies. “If we felt that nothing would happen, we would resume our protest rallies..."

About 7 months ago, the Journalists for Human Rights organization launched an investigation of a mine explosion incident at the Martakert military unit in Artsakh on November 21, 2017. Three servicemen, lieutenant Gegham Zakaryan, privates Sargis Abrahamyan and Sargis Melikyan were kil

Captain Hmayak Hakobyan was not buried by military order and honor. The military did not even send a “military band” to the village, which usually plays the hymn in honor of the deceased officers. Nobody has visited the Hakobyans from the Defense Ministry, no one has condoled them.
